New service offers zero-emissions, ultra-fast deliveries using the FAA-approved Matternet M2 platform
Matternet has entered the home delivery market with the launch of the first-ever drone delivery service in Silicon Valley. The service, powered by the company’s FAA Type-Certified Drone Delivery Platform, is currently being piloted in Mountain View and Sunnyvale, offering a new way for residents to receive food and commercial items quickly and with zero emissions.
A New Era for Drone Delivery
Since August 30, Matternet has been running its pilot program using a variant of its M2 Drone Delivery platform. This system is the only Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Type-Certified platform for drone delivery in the United States, giving it the ability to operate in controlled airspace over densely populated areas.
Each drone is equipped with a Tether Drop system, allowing packages to be safely lowered directly to customers’ doorsteps. This innovative approach provides an entirely new delivery experience for consumers.
“After years of advancing drone delivery in healthcare, we’re excited to launch our first home delivery operation in the heart of Silicon Valley,” said Andreas Raptopoulos, Founder and CEO of Matternet. “We’re entering the next phase of scale in drone delivery — building a new layer of ultra-efficient logistics infrastructure that will become an essential utility for every household.”
How It Works
Matternet’s home delivery system is fully automated. Drones are loaded at a central hub and fly directly to the customer’s home. Once there, the drone descends safely above the designated drop zone and releases the package via its tether. After completing the delivery, the drone returns to the hub, swaps its battery, picks up the next package, and takes off for the next delivery—all in under 60 seconds.
“The future is finally here — this is the right delivery experience for the digital age,” Raptopoulos said. “It is so fast, it feels like magic. And every delivery means one less trip by car — less congestion in our cities, and fewer emissions in the air we breathe.”
Environmental and Operational Benefits
Matternet’s drone delivery platform aims to reduce road congestion, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and optimize efficiency through automation. Additionally, the drones are designed to operate quietly and with respect for privacy, ensuring they can function in urban environments without causing disruptions.
The pilot program marks a significant step for Matternet as the company prepares to expand its home delivery operations in collaboration with logistics partners. According to the company, early feedback from Mountain View and Sunnyvale residents has been positive, with many noting the speed and convenience of the service.
