For Diablo 4 players, the news that there wouldn’t be a new expansion this year was a pretty tough pill to swallow. However, with the reveal of its roadmap for 2025 and beyond, Blizzard may have just sweetened the deal. Confirming the themes of the RPG’s next three seasons and some of the major content they contain, it also teases that the heavily requested leaderboards feature will be arriving – albeit not until next year.
Diablo 4 has already kicked off the year in a strong fashion with its witchcraft-themed Season 7, but with the Diablo 4 Season 8 release date just around the corner, Blizzard has laid out some of its big additions. With the theme of Belial’s Return, it introduces Boss Powers, following on from the Witch Powers and Vampiric Powers of previous seasons. It’ll also contain a new activity called Apparition Incursion, there’ll be a two-year anniversary celebration (likely as some kind of event) and a new crossover with a well-known IP. If I was a betting man, I’d wager it’s Doom The Dark Ages, but time will tell if that theory’s right!
On top of the limited-time seasonal stuff, new Lair Bosses are being added and the entire experience is getting a once-over. As was hinted at earlier in the year, the RPG’s battle pass system is also getting reworked into the new Reliquaries system, which should give you more control over the rewards you earn from leveling up throughout each season.
Moving on to Season 9, which is dubbed Sins of the Horadrim, there is, unsurprisingly, a focus on Diablo’s ancient wizardly order. You’ll get access to Horadric Powers, so expect all classes to get a bit of a magical makeover. This season will also deliver new Nightmare Dungeon activities and bring keyboard and mouse support to console players, letting them get a bit closer to the PC experience.
Infernal Chaos is the theme of Season 10, which will round out 2025. Chaos Powers will be added to your arsenal, and Diablo 4’s excellent roguelike mode Infernal Hordes is getting a major update. Like in Season 8, another new IP collaboration will be coming too.
Then to tease what’s coming in 2026, Blizzard of course mentions that the new expansion will drop and says that a new ranking system is on the way. However, the big revelation here is that official leaderboards are in the works and will arrive next year. It’s a bit disappointing that it’s not arriving in 2025, but at least it is actually in development.
So, no new expansion this year, but that’s a decent amount to get excited about. Until Season 8 arrives, check out some of the best games like Diablo. Or you can get excited about some of the upcoming PC games arriving in 2025 and beyond.
