Dead Rails Nightmare Mode Guide

We’ll explain how to unlock the mode, what it’s about, and our tips to get through it in one piece.

How To Unlock Nightmare Mode

If you want to run straight into the hardcore experience, you might be disappointed. Nightmare Mode is locked when you first start Dead Rails.

You can unlock Nightmare Mode by completing at least one run, where you succeed in lowering the bridge at the end fort and reach Mexico. This can be multiplayer, solo, or during one of the weird challenge runs, all that matters is you’ve made it to the end of the line at least once. When you’ve done that, you should be able to select Nightmare Mode when you pick your team size in the lobby.

About Nightmare Mode

Nightmare Mode is essentially Dead Rails, but harder. The key differences are as follows.

  • Less loot spawns, making earning money tougher.
  • Enemies are stronger. They do more damage, and have more health, making combat encounters far more risky.
  • No passive health regeneration. This means once you’ve lost health then it’s gone unless you use a healing item like bandages, Snake Oil, using the Vampire Knife, or eating corpses as the Zombie class.

Nightmare Mode Tips

So how do you get through it? Here are a few tips we can offer.

  • Stock up at the Doctor. You can’t rely on passive regen, so you need to put more resources toward healing items. Bandages are cheap, and may be a necessity if you want to survive til the end.
  • Team up. It’s easier to handle the beefed-up enemies when you have a few people working together.
  • Don’t get greedy. Sterling Mines? The Castle? Fort Constitution? These are much worse in Nightmare Mode, and might be worth your time.
