While we can look forward to collecting the Crimson Desert achievements on Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2025, we might have had to wait a little longer to play the Xbox RPG if Sony had its way. Pearl Abyss reportedly declined a Crimson Desert PlayStation exclusivity deal, which would have left players on Xbox waiting another year.PlayStation exclusivity reportedly turned down by Crimson Desert devsPearl Abyss, the developer behind the popular MMO Black Desert, was reportedly approached by Sony with an exclusivity deal for the developer’s next game, Crimson Desert. The news comes from a financial reporter on Naver, who recently attended an investor relations session with Pearl Abyss, and whose blog is currently set to private. “We [Pearl Abyss] spent a lot of time considering our release strategy,” the English translation says (via Windows Central). “Sony has essentially seen the entire game and expressed interest in publishing it, offering several favorable terms. If we had gone with Sony as a publisher, the game would have been exclusive to PlayStation for a year, with no release on Xbox, and PC distribution rights would also belong to Sony. Despite these restrictions, Sony’s marketing power and various unique incentives were appealing. However, after evaluating the expected sales and revenue-sharing structure, we decided that self-publishing would be more beneficial. It’s 99% certain that we will publish the game ourselves.”In a statement sent to Eurogamer, a Pearl Abyss spokesperson said: “In our last quarter earnings call, which is publicly available, we revealed that we would publish Crimson Desert independently. We of course honor and appreciate our business partners who we are constantly in touch with about our progress and plans, and we are discussing various forms of collaboration with them.”Additionally, we have not announced any release date yet, so any articles about the topic are only speculation at this point. We look forward to showcasing a playable Crimson Desert build to media this week in Paris and to the public at G-Star in November.”Crimson Desert is down to launch on Xbox sometime in 2025. If you’ve not checked out Crimson Desert yet, it’s a gorgeous-looking action-RPG set in a war-torn continent called Pywel. You must embark on a journey across the medieval fantasy world to reunite with your Greymane companions, meeting “mystical creatures, heroes, and maniacal rulers out for blood” along the way.Although Microsoft also makes third-party exclusivity deals as we’ve seen with Palworld and Stalker 2, we’ve missed out on a few brilliant games on Xbox this year due to Sony’s exclusivity deals, such as the Silent Hill 2 remake, Final Fantasy VII, and Black Myth: Wukong (which has just been rated for Xbox).
