Developer Toys for Bob was reportedly in the early stages of conceptualizing a fifth mainline entry into the Crash Bandicoot series soon after we started collecting the Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time achievements. According to the report, Crash Bandicoot 5 could have featured a Spyro the Dragon crossover, but it was canceled in favor of live service game Crash Team Rumble.Crash Bandicoot 5 could have been the Spyro crossover we neededLast month, a former Toys for Bob artist suggested that when players learn of a “Crash 5 that never was,” the news would “break hearts.” Well, it appears that statement could be far truer than we would have liked. According to a new report from video game historian Liam Robertson on the Did You Know Gaming YouTube channel, Crash Bandicoot could have seen Spyro the Dragon join for a crossover adventure.Robertson says that Crash Bandicoot 5 was in the early stages of pre-production before it was ultimately canceled, but it was expected to be a single-player 3D platformer similar to its predecessors. Looking at some of the alleged story details and concept art shared in the video, Crash Bandicoot 5 would have seen some classic villains return for another spin alongside some fresh faces. There were apparently talks about setting the game in The Academy of Evil, which was a level in 2004’s Crash Twinsanity. The team was also reportedly considering making it a full Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon crossover game, using an interdimensional threat as a story plot, with players having the ability to control each character in their respective worlds and even perform team-up moves.Unfortunately, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time’s sales didn’t reach Activision’s expectations, and Crash 5 was reportedly canceled as a result — a single-player Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater sequel was also shot down during this time too, according to the report. Toys for Bob went on to make Crash Team Rumble, which launched just before Microsoft successfully acquired Activision Blizzard.Toys for Bob has now gone independent and has signed a deal with Microsoft to publish its next game.
