Cowboys may cut defensive star after not taking a pay cut

It looks like the Dallas Cowboys may end up parting ways with a defensive star after he ended up refusing to take a pay cut.

DeMarcus Lawrence and the Dallas Cowboys appear to be at odds over a possible pay cut.

According to a report from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys apparently offered Lawrence a pay cut as they go through the almost always arduous task of trying to navigate cap space and salaries.

However, just because Dallas wanted Lawrence to take a pay cut doesn’t mean he was all that interested in making less money. As Watkins reports, Lawrence made the choice to decline the pay cut and now his time with the team that drafted him in 2014 might be coming to a close.

There is a less-than-ideal precedent here that might be bad news for Lawrence. Prior to drafting Lawrence, DeMarcus Ware was a defensive star for the Cowboys. He was very talented at tackling folks and was a pretty big name in Dallas. But when Dallas ran into some cap space issues, the Cowboys made the decision to move on from Ware.

As Watkins reports, it looks like that sort of move might happen here.

The Cowboys are in the midst of making all sorts of difficult money decisions right now. Due to the way some salaries are structured, Dallas is having to consider moving on from several talented contributors.

It seems like that’s never a fun thing to have to do.

Just as Lawrence might end up elsewhere, Amari Cooper could end up playing for a team other than Dallas this coming season.

The decisions that Dallas has to make are absolutely going to be difficult.
