Celestia Chain Of Fate Review
Celestia: Chain of Fate follows a girl called Aria, who believes she is living a normal life until a letter arrives telling her to join a magic academy. You can change the character name when starting. I decided to keep it as Aria (but if you could customize how your character looks, I definitely would have changed it to my name!).
After confronting her parents who adopted her, she finds out she has both Angelus and Daemon blood. She sets off to the Academy of Celestia, leaving the human realm behind, and starting a new life. The game isn’t all romance though! You learn about the history of Angelus and Daemon, and the war that broke out between the races. There is also a sense of action and adventure as you complete different trials, and uncover the mysteries each race offers.
Chained To A Choice
I love games where your choices matter, and that is very much the case with Celestia: Chain of Fate – to some extent. It seems I have a curse with Otome games, as on my first playthrough, I always reach a bad ending. My streak continued here, but after restarting I managed to get a better conclusion.
When I say your choices somewhat matter, it’s because often, they don’t. When you have the chance to speak, there are three dialogue options. However, there were a few times when I made a choice, and it had no impact on what Aria did. At the start of the game, I chose the option that told her to ‘run away’, and she decided to stay still anyway. Of course, there are times it does make an impact (hence why I received a bad ending initially) but it’s something to be aware of.
The Side Characters
Despite knowing which characters were romanceable, I couldn’t help but feel like I was missing out. The extremely handsome guy in the picture above was love at first sight for me. But unfortunately, he wasn’t an option.
There are many characters you meet during your time in the academy, so if you can’t get enough of them… I have good news! Celestia is separated into chapters. If you complete one without getting the bad ending, you will unlock side stories for a character. I was happy I still got some content for Shadow (as well as Seraph and Damien… other characters I had no chance with) so luckily, not all is lost.
Who Was My Match Made In Heaven?
I really struggled deciding which character to romance, because they all have something great about them. There’s Val, the ‘bad boy’ from the Daemon Realm. Despite coming off as mean at first, he has an extremely gentle and caring side to him. On the other hand, there’s Ash. He’s from the Angelus Realm and comes from a very wealthy family. He is the first romanceable character you meet and is a little more on the serious side. That being said, he is still very sweet and always does what he can to help Aria when she needs it.
That leaves me with Luke. The animal-loving, tender, and a little shy Angelus, and the one I romanced. Luke has a way with words when it comes to humans, Daemon, Angelus… and even animals! He is one of the sweetest characters in the entire game. Not to go down the ‘tragic backstory’ route, but he definitely has a more unfortunate past. I won’t spoil anything, don’t worry, but knowing more about his story made me develop a soft spot for him.
I didn’t notice this until later, but you can see the bond you have with the three romanceable characters by opening the menu and selecting ‘Affection’. When I first checked, my relationship with Val was higher than anyone else. So, I quickly worked on increasing it with Luke. This was really handy to have, as sometimes the dialogue options don’t make it clear which character it is in favour of.
The Bromance Of Dreams
Despite the romance between Aria and the three guys, I think the real match made in heaven was between Val and Ash. They don’t actually get together, but I felt like I was third-wheeling a lot of the time during the scenes involving them. They are two complete opposites, so they regularly clashed, but it came across as… flirty? I mean, they literally blush in front of each other! Their dynamic was really fun to watch and see develop over time, and it only adds to how much depth each character has.
All of the characters (yes, even the ones that only briefly appear) were so well written. I would have liked to see some voice acting involved, as the characters don’t speak to you. However, I don’t see this as a bad thing. As instead of that, you get to listen to a beautifully orchestrated soundtrack.
Celestia: Chain of Fate completely took my breath away, and it truly felt like I was in a fairy tale. The art and music are beautiful, and I loved that even the people you only meet a few times have additional stories and extras dedicated to them. I’ve already romanced Luke… so I think I’ll go for Ash next!
