While many fans of the franchise are patiently waiting for news about Borderlands 4, the Borderlands movie had an opportunity to fill the gap and generate some extra attention for the franchise. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s fumbled its chances, as the Borderlands movie flopped during its opening weekend and is currently one of the lowest-reviewed movies of the year.Borderlands movie suffers heavy blow during its opening weekendIn somewhat unsurprising news, Variety reports that Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie has performed terribly during its opening weekend. With a production budget of roughly $115 million and marketing and distribution costs of around $30 million, the movie’s opening weekend earnings of just $16.5 million ($8.8 million domestic and $7.7 million international) is a heavy blow. Variety reports that “nearly 60% of production costs for Borderlands were covered by international presales,” but it’s still a dreadful turnout. The movie, which stars Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jamie Lee Curtis was slammed with negative reviews from critics. The movie currently sits with a measly Metacritic score of 27 and a 9% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year. “It’s a total miss,” Franchise Entertainment Research movie consulting firm boss, David A. Gross told Variety. “If an action comedy is going to work, it has to be funny, and almost no one thinks this picture is.”While the Borderlands movie doesn’t seem to be scratching the itch for fans of the franchise, we can hopefully look forward to some new games. Last year, a former Gearbox employee’s LinkedIn mentioned Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2, so we’ll hopefully learn something soon.
