Blizzard is rolling out a host of changes for Overwatch 2 with Season 9: Champions, which kicks off February 13 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, with the aim of making “PvP gameplay more rewarding and fun.””We’ve heard your feedback on Competitive Play over the last eight seasons, and we have some big updates coming that will give you the opportunity to build on your skills and see how you progress through the Competitive ranks,” Blizzard says. “We built a better system that’s more accurate while also helping convey the meaning behind the mathematical complexity of a modern matchmaker and bring clear insights about what impacts your rank in every match.”One major change Blizzard will be bringing to Overwatch 2 with Season 9 is the reintroduction of placement matches — which means all players will have their competitive Skill Rank reset. Everyone will need to compete in ten placement matches to determine their starting rank. When competing, you’ll notice that you’ll be given an update at the end of each match with your progress changes in each skill division, an overview of modifiers that affected your last match, and the like. Blizzard says that its goal is to give players “greater transparency in each individual match.”With those changes in place, all players will have a chance to work towards the new Champion rank, a step above Grandmaster. Along your way to greatness, you’ll have a chance to unlock a host of competitive rewards, including Jade weapon variants, which will be rewarded based on your dedication to competitive play and not your skill. Any Competitive Points you’ve earned before the start of the Season will be changed to Legacy Competitive Points so you can continue unlocking Gold weapon variants.Alongside the Competitive changes, Overwatch 2’s core gameplay will receive a few improvements as well. If Competitive play isn’t your cup of tea, it’s worth checking out Blizzard’s blog for a look at the smaller changes being implemented with Season 9.Overwatch 2 sits on our list of the best free Xbox games.
