There are bold takes, and then there are bold takes that you back up by putting money on them.
One bettor appears to have done just that, placing a $1000 bet at Caesar’s Sportsbook on New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr to win the NFL’s MVP award this season.
That’s a lot of cash for a player that is +6000 to win the MVP. Maybe Carr is rejuvenated from a change of scenery this offseason, but oddsmakers have him way down the list in the latest odds:
Odds to win NFL MVP Award in 2023 season
The Saints are hoping that Carr can take them to the playoffs in a weak NFC South division that no longer has to deal with Tom Brady.
Carr is an upgrade over Andy Dalton, who started the majority of the Saints’ games in the 2022 season, but he’d have to really improve on his play from last season to win the league’s MVP award.
Last season, Carr threw for 3,522 yards and 24 touchdowns in 15 games. He also threw a career-high 14 interceptions, the second straight season that he has thrown 14 picks.
While this bet is a little out there, Carr did nearly win the MVP award once in his career, but that was back in 2016. Carr finished third in MVP voting that season after going 12-3 as the then-Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback.
He threw for 28 touchdowns and just six picks that season, and Saints fans, and this bettor, would love if he could turn in a performance like that in the 2023 campaign.
I respect backing up such a bold take, and if this bet hits, this bettor is going to have 60,000 reasons to enjoy the risk they took.
