2024 has been a stacked year for RPGs. We’ve had Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, and many more. I could just make this whole intro a list of every role-playing game that was huge this year, but that would be doing Drova Forsaken Kin a massive disservice. With dashes of mythology, pixel art, old-school CRPGs, and an incredibly high Steam user rating, Drova’s newest update makes the game harder than ever, so now’s the time to try it.
As of writing, Drova Forsaken Kin has a staggering 96% user rating from 4,000 reviews. This is a new RPG you easily could have missed this year, so consider this me telling you to check it out. Set in a world inspired by Celtic mythology, society is using the spirits that govern nature for their own gain, and it’s up to you to decide what to do about it. With gorgeously gloomy pixel art and tense, methodical fights Drova has quickly become one of the most beloved role-playing games of the year.
Developer Just2D is calling Drova’s new 1.2 update the “Insane Patch,” and it’s easy to see why. “The ‘Insane’ difficulty is for those players who feel like they’ve already mastered what Drova had to offer on ‘Classic’ and are yearning for a more difficult challenge,” Just2D writes. “It’s been important to us to not just skew around some numbers to increase enemy HP. We also integrated new behaviors and attacks for known enemies that were not in the game previously.”
Just2D has reworked enemy attacks for Insane difficulty to “create new challenges,” while your character will receive 30% more and dish out 20% less damage, just to make it that much tougher. Don’t worry too much, however, as you can go into the settings to modify these values to your liking.
Not all hope is lost, though, as Just2D has also added the new Heavy Leather Armor to Chapter 1 to improve the early game’s armor progression. Food has also received a late-game rework, as it will now heal one to three life every four seconds, and lose a handful of charges depending on the dish.
This isn’t even Drova 1.2’s toughest challenge, either, as Just2D has also added the new Hardcore save mode. In Hardcore your character isn’t allowed to die, but when they do anyway, your save will be bumped down to Iron (with Hardcore available in both Drova’s Classic and Insane modes). Iron mode isn’t a walk in the park, though, as here you only get one save for the entire game.
Drova Forsaken Kin patch 1.2 is out right now as developer Just2D also knocks 20% off the asking price on Steam, so expect to pay $19.99 / £18.93. You can check it out on Steam here.
