City building games come in so many flavors that it can be hard to pick just one. Cities Skylines puts you in charge of a modern metropolis, Manor Lords transports you back to the medieval age, and Frostpunk sends you to a cold, apocalyptic future. These might be some of the best games the genre has to offer, but Anno 1800 stands tall above the rest. If you’ve never played it I can’t recommend the game enough, especially considering it’s a staggering 75% off right now.
Anno 1800 is all about production and supply. Set during the industrial age of the 19th century, you need to rule not just with force, but with planning. Efficient logistical networks, diplomacy, and trade are key to victory in the city building game. Industrialization is rampant, and it’s up to you to navigate it.
In case it wasn’t obvious, Anno 1800 is less about the individual buildings you’d take charge of in Cities Skylines, and more about the bigger picture. The needs of your inhabitants are still incredibly important, but you must balance them with production chains, trade routes, and maybe even warfare.

Back in 2023 Ubisoft also added over 100 Steam achievements to Anno 1800, giving you an extra layer of challenge whether you’re a new or old player. There’s plenty to unlock whether you have any of the DLC or not, so it’s a perfect reason to dive in.
