Whether you grew up with classic PC games like Gothic and Baldur’s Gate, or simply have a fondness for old-school CRPGs, Drova: Forsaken Kin is well worth a look. A loving throwback rendered in fantastic pixel-art fashion, Drova combines grimdark fantasy and Celtic mythology to hand-craft an intriguing world ripe for exploration and discovery. With the launch of its latest update, The Flesh Rises, developer Just2D says that Drova is now fully complete, and to celebrate you can grab it at a discount on Steam.
Wearing its love for classic PC games on its proverbial sleeve, Just2D parks Drova: Forsaken Kin at the intersection of storytelling and action. You begin your adventure as a complete nobody in a society that has uncovered the secrets of a dead empire, allowing them to capture the very spirits that control nature and employ their power. Unfortunately, this comes at the risk of invoking the wrath of the remaining spirit forces in the world around you.
You’re open to explore Drova in any direction that takes your fancy, with the ability to align yourself with either of its two leading factions, meet all manner of NPCs and experts that can teach you new skills, and learn how to evoke the power of the spirits for yourself. Its story evolves based on the actions and dialogue choices you make, while its ‘flow-based combat system’ lets you approach battles however you wish.
Since its launch in October 2024, Drova has earned itself the elusive ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating on Steam, with 95% of player reviews recommending it. Just2D has rolled out three major updates in the time since, with the most recent of these, patch 1.3, landing this weekend. Previous updates included new features, customization options, and quality-of-life improvements based on player feedback, as well as more monster behaviors and an additional difficulty setting that “allows players to make use of their knowledge about Drova.”
The new patch is titled ‘The Flesh Rises’ and it expands Drova’s magic to offer more early-game options, while also introducing new weapon-based spell types that better befit warriors and those that favor physical combat. The Red Moor has been upgraded with a visual overhaul, and you’ll be able to explore how it came to life and investigate the secrets of the Bygones through a new dungeon.
Now, Just2D says its journey with Drova is at an end. “Drova was our life for the last four years and it influenced our lives in so many ways,” the developer writes. “During all that time, you’ve followed us, you’ve been there for us, you helped shape Drova to become the game it is today. We can’t thank you enough – you are the reason why we can continue creating games. And that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
While there will be a few small additions and bug fixes released for Drova in the future, Just2D is now moving its focus onto a new project. “We cannot really say much about it just yet as we’re still in the process of prototyping,” it explains, “but one thing is carved in stone. We want to build on the experiences we’ve made with Drova. And it will, once again, be an RPG.” For now, if you’re ready to give Drova a try in its complete form, a special Steam sale lets you do so at a discount.
Drova Forsaken Kin is 25% off on Steam through Friday April 4, meaning you’ll pay just $18.74 / 17.24 for your copy until then. Take a look here.
