Baldur’s Gate 3 boss apologises for forgetting to announce Xbox release

Other than hoovering up numerous accolades at The Game Awards and dropping a short trailer, there was very little from Baldur’s Gate 3 during the show… much less the highly-anticipated Xbox release date. As it turns out, Larian Studios’ CEO Swen Vincke was supposed to announce the game’s shadow drop onto the system during an acceptance speech but may have forgotten in all of the excitement. After an arduous wait, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on Xbox Series X|S after shadow-dropping onto the platform during The Game Awards. If, like many, you were watching the show, you may have reached the end wondering where the promised Xbox announcement from Larian was — we only learned that the game had launched onto Xbox Series X|S from the Baldur’s Gate 3 accolades trailer’s description. It seems that the announcement was supposed to come from Swen Vincke during an award acceptance speech, like Game of the Year, which Baldur’s Gate 3 won, but the CEO may have forgotten. “I had one job and that was to announce this if we won an award,” Vincke said on X. “Sorry all but happy it’s out there!”Larian picked up a swathe of awards during the show yesterday, with Baldur’s Gate 3 winning the Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, Player’s Voice, and Game of the Year categories, so it’s understandable that Vincke might have forgotten the Xbox announcement when wrapped up in all of the excitement — and that awesome suit of armor! We’re sure the terrible handling of acceptance speeches by The Game Awards didn’t help much either, though, which gave developers a pitiful length of time to thank everyone for their awards, so that more game announcements, promotions, and advertisements could be crammed into the show’s four-hour runtime. As shown in the post above from DaveOshry on X, a prompt saying “please wrap it up” was shown to the developers after only a couple of minutes of speech time — and those who weren’t quick enough were obnoxiously interrupted by music to shut down their speech. Honestly, this year should have just been called Winter Game Fest and not a celebration of the developers who actually make the games we love. So, there you have it, Baldur’s Gate 3 was supposed to have a proper announcement last night. If you weren’t able to watch the show, we’ve put together a comprehensive roundup of everything announced at The Game Awards for you. Oh, hold on, I’m being asked to wrap it up…
