With Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time for a spooky murder mystery. Bad Blood is a new project that aims to put an interactive spin on the murder mystery format. It’s a card game that’s accompanied by both an illustrated journal and a comic book that flesh out the game’s plot and characters. With the crowdfunding campaign for Bad Blood now live on Kickstarter, we’ve got a closer look at the game and its companion books. Check out the slideshow gallery below to see the gorgeous artwork fueling this tale of murder and intrigue in a 1920’s speakeasy:Bad Blood Preview GalleryBad Blood tells the story of Joseph Field, a journalist drawn into a glamorous speakeasy called The Broken Promise and who investigates the murder of a woman named Dee Dumas. The game is created by Kelly McMahon (the mind behind 2021’s Imperium), who also provides the art deco-style illustrations for the cards and the companion journal. While the cards can be used as a traditional playing card deck, they also feature subtle clues pointing to the culprit in this murder mystery. The journal features prose by writer Mat Groom (Inferno Girl Red). The story is also chronicled in an 8-page ashcan comic written by Groom, drawn by Nicoletta Baldari (Glow) and edited by Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black). These companion books are available in higher pledge tiers. Other tiers include additional extras like an enamel pin and art prints. “There is a romance to vice, the entanglement of brazen behaviour woven together with unkept secrets,” McMahon tells IGN. “This delicate tapestry is the foundation to our sinful metropolis— journalist Joseph Field is tugging on the strings of society’s most devious to unravel the murder of Dee Dumas. With the razzle dazzle of the 1920s setting the scene for not only the world but the design of the deck it’s been a dream to bring this world to life across so many mediums with Mat, Nicoletta and Kyle.” “The great thing about the mystery genre is that the writer needs to make everyone feel interesting and important, because anyone can be a suspect. I loved working with Kelly to explore the relationships between these larger-than-life characters, and figure out how best to guide players through both the mystery, and this evocative world.” Groom says. “With the journalist’s journal in hand, it’s up to players to use his detailed notes, as well as clues found on in the card art, to find the right combination of means, motive and opportunity — boxing in the wily killer, and bringing justice to a city that’s almost forgotten what it means.”“From Darwin Cooke’s adaptations of the Parker novels to the epic collaborations of Criminal masterminds Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, there’s a terrific tradition of stylish crime and mystery comics,” Higgins says. “Seeing Kelly’s gorgeous designs and hearing the story she and Mat have built for the murder mystery game made me incredibly excited at the idea of putting together a Bad Blood comic that’s as stylish and deadly as the rest of the collaboration, to help keep fans guessing until the very end.”Baldari adds, “Bad Blood is a 1920s mystery. I wanted the cover to reflect a bit of the lively atmosphere of The Great Gatsby and the floral, liberty style typical of Art Nouveau. I can’t wait to dive into this amazing card game and find out who the killer is!”Elsewhere in the world of comics, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a new comic book spinoff, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is starting the countdown to issue #150.Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN.
