Asus’ new gaming tablet, the Asus ROG Flow Z13, has just appeared in a benchmark leak, in part showcasing the incredible performance of the AMD Ryzen Max+ 395 CPU that powers it. The previous iteration of this device used an Intel CPU and Nvidia RTX 4060 laptop GPU but AMD’s new “Strix Halo” chip is so powerful, it has replaced both.
The leak strongly suggests that future AMD-powered contenders for our best gaming laptop and best handheld gaming PC lists will be incredibly powerful while managing to do away with an entire extra chip.
The leak comes from one of the most regular sources of PC chip leaks, Geekbench. This benchmarking software often uploads test runs to its online database that allows CPU sleuths to track down test runs that are performed on new, unannounced hardware. In this case, the hardware in question is the upcoming second generation of the Asus ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet.
The first generation of this device uses an Intel Core i9-13900H CPU and an Nvidia RTX 4060 laptop GPU, but this leak reveals that the updated device will use an “AMD Ryzen Max+ 395 w/ Radeon 8060S graphics.”
The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip has been leaked before, and we’ve seen a Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395 benchmark leak before too. However, this is the first time we’ve seen the chip appear in a true gaming device.
Not that the benchmark itself tells us much about the graphics prowess of this chip, however. This particular Geekbench test assesses the CPU’s power which, while solid enough, isn’t the truly interesting part of this chip. Instead, it’s those previous leaks that demonstrate just how powerful this chip will be when it comes to gaming performance.
Those leaks showed the chip will have 2,560 GPU stream processors, which is more than a PS5, which uses a similar architecture, and also enough to outpace an RTX 4060, delivering over 100fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p using medium graphics presets.
As for that CPU score, its 16 Zen 5 cores are shown to be far more powerful than AMD’s current flagship laptop processors. The Strix Halo chip clears the Ryzen 9 7945HX and its 3D V-Cache variation by around 5,000 points and 4,000 points respectively.
If these leaks show anything, it’s that the CPU used in this unannounced ROG Z13 refresh will be a gaming powerhouse, even if it hasn’t been officially announced yet. We might not have long to wait, however. AMD is expected to make several announcements, including regarding this new AI Max+ 395 CPU, at the CES 2025 trade show in Las Vegas next month.
It’s also anticipated that AMD’s next-generation desktop GPUs will make an appearance, which could add some spice to the best graphics cards list. Asus will also be at CES, with its main brand and the ROG gaming brand holding different events.
