Michigan is full of courses like Arrowhead: pleasant enough; not worth a significant road trip; but undoubtedly a joy to area players.

Arrowhead is a parklands — and occasionally woodlands — style course with a lot of variety from hole to hole, thanks to the hilly terrain over which it is routed. The first hole is a downward tee shot; the second, an uphill drive, followed by a downhill approach; the third is down and then slightly up; and so forth.

There’s a lot of variety in the shapes, as well, with doglegs left and right, fairways pinching for water hazards and slopes that will pitch in any direction. Some of the holes are downright clever.

Arrowhead will certainly keep your interest.

The fifth at Arrowhead is a 292 yard par 4

My favorite hole at Arrowhead was the par 4 fifth. If I was blindfolded and paradropped onto this hole, my first thought would be that I was on one of several courses in Northern Michigan.

The downhill tee shot must carry an expanse of scrub to a fairway set at a 45 degree angle away. The angle makes the fairway wide, but not deep. Club selection is key off the tee on this short par 4. Too much, and you roll into the trees. Too little for the amount of scrub you decide to take on, and you’re in trouble.

The second shot is to a semi peninsular green. The front and right of the green are guarded by a marsh. The back is set against a hillside. As with the tee shot, this is all about picking the right club.

I bailed right — although not deliberately. I just worked out that way. From there, it was a pitch and putt.

The tenth at Arrowhead is a 279 yard par 4.

Even from the back tees, Arrowhead is on the shorter side, coming in at just over 6,000 yards. As such, it’s friendly for beginning and less-skilled golfers. On the day I was there, I played through a group that included a ninety year old golfer (not guessing — the group told me this) and they were having a lot of fun.

One of my life’s goals is to still be playing in my 90s.

A fairway at Arrowhead.

Conditions on the day I played were a mixed bag. Some holes were fine, while others were frankly, terrible. Taken as a complete set, the course was just okay.

I would definitely play Arrowhead again if I happened to be in the area with time for a round.
