There’s something so alluring about a floating city. Whether a nightmarish dystopia like Columbia in Bioshock: Infinite or the magic splendor of Dalaran in World of Warcraft, the impossible architecture captures the imagination. Aloft is a fresh open-world experience all about exploring ancient cities in the sky, and it just entered Early Access for you to take flight.
In Aloft, something’s corrupting the natural ecosystem, and you’re the one who needs to clean it up. The survival game blends agriculture, base-building, and some hunting with the novelty of the environments being islands positioned mid-air among the clouds.
Getting around requires personal gliders, used to ride the wind from place-to-place. Airships are available in the open-world game too, maneuvered like pirate ships going by the glimpse we see in the release trailer. It all makes for what looks like a gentle experience, built on escapism and constructing a homestead amid some open air splendor.
Most importantly, you can pet all the animals you decide to keep, a keen detail Astrolabe Interactive Inc and Funcom highlight several times in the latest footage. Honestly, as nice and rewarding as all the exploration and construction looks, raising cattle just to give each and every one of them head pats might be the real selling point here.
The farming game is described as “feel-good” from the press release, and that’s apt based on first impressions. The Early Access roadmap includes a number of promising updates, including UX and UI improvements, more glider options, and animal reproduction.
