As happened in other Bethesda games, such as Fallout or The Elder Scrolls, even in Starfield there will be factions that you can join. For this reason, we decided to create this Starfield factions article in which we give you an overview of all the factions present in the game: their history, their line of thought, and more, in order to be ready to carry out your choice as soon as the game is available.
All Starfield factions explained
Taking part in one or more factions is certainly a positive thing not only to be able to feel like belonging to a group but also from the point of view of the actual gameplay. In fact, the factions allow you to complete missions and consequently earn experience points and rewards of various kinds.
Starfield’s major factions
Starfield offers its players five main factions that you can join (even all five if you wish). For this reason, in this article, we will explain how to join them.
Constellation
Founded in 2275, Constellation is a team of illustrious space explorers who are dedicated to solving the galaxy’s greatest mysteries and finding proof of authentic alien civilizations. You can find this faction in Headquarters – New Atlantis, Jemison (Alpha Centauri System). By the year 2330, with a large portion of the galaxy having been rapidly explored, interest in the group had started to wane and the majority of the population had come to the conclusion that there was nothing else to discover in the expanse of space. The discovery of a puzzling alien artifact, however, gave the group a newfound drive to solve the puzzle of any extraterrestrial life that might exist in the cosmos. This is where your character enters the picture.
How to join Constellation
You can’t help but join this faction. In fact, as soon as you complete the first main mission of Starfield, you will automatically take part in the Constellation faction. As a result, there are not many steps to follow if you intend to join it.
The United Colonies
One of the two main governmental entities in Starfield, which encompasses a sizable portion of the galaxy surrounding the Sol System and the “central” systems, is the United Colonies. You can find this faction in Capital – New Atlantis, Jemison (Alpha Centauri System). The United Colonies, a centralized republic with a sizable Starfleet force, was formerly embroiled in a bloody conflict with the Freestar Collective during the Colony War, though the two parties have since agreed to a tense cease-fire. These days, the rise of the pirate group known as the Crimson Fleet has taken precedence because of concerns raised by their incursion into the United Colonies’ territory.
How to join the United Colonies
To be able to join this faction, what you will have to do is become a member of the UC Vanguard, which you can do right at the start of the game. After completing the first mission, in fact, you will find yourself in New Atlantis and here you can go to the MAST Headquarters and talk to Commander John Tuala to ask him to join them.
Freestar Collective
One of the two principal governmental bodies in Starfield is the Freestar Collective. Although considerably smaller than the United Colonies, the Freestar Collective is a libertarian alliance of planets and star systems that wants to govern itself in a more “wild west” fashion. You can find this faction in Capital – Akila City, Akila (Cheyenne System). It waged a costly war against the United Colonies to maintain its independence. Even though they don’t have the same level of military power as the United Colonies, the Freestar Rangers are dedicated to acting as a guard and investigation force to maintain order in the settled systems.
How to join Freestar Collective
Does the Freestar Collective faction seem to be the right one for you? Don’t worry, here’s what you need to do to join it. First of all, go to Akila City and intervene in the Job Gone Wrong mission which begins as soon as you land in this city. Once you complete this mission, complete the next one, Deputized, and you will officially be part of the Freestar Collective factions. From now on, you can continue all missions of this faction as soon as you have the chance.
Crimson Fleet
The Crimson Fleet, a gang of semi-organized space pirates, have gained notoriety over time and are now posing a threat to the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective as they go into the populated systems. Although they have no home planet, their main base is on the enormous spacecraft The Key, which moves through the Kryx System and is where they have their main base of operations. If you choose a life of piracy, you can find a place within their ranks, despite the fact that they are often regarded as a real enemy of the established systems.
Hot to join Crimson Fleet
To be able to join this faction, all you have to do is complete the Deep Cover mission (infiltrate the faction) that will be assigned to you by the UC Vanguard. In order to be assigned this mission, you will have to get arrested by committing any crime in one of the United Colonies systems or by joining the UC Vanguard faction. Once you join, faction missions will be available to complete.
Ryujin Industries
Ryujin Industries is a faction linked to one of the large corporations that are present in the game. This faction controls Neon and has great influence on local authorities who appear to be intimidated by corporate power. If you intend to join the cause of this faction, keep in mind that you will have to get your hands dirty and carry out many espionage assignments. The competition at these levels is high, so you will have to be smarter than others to climb the ladder of power.
How to join Ryujin Industries
If this is the faction that’s right for you and you’re interested in taking part, here’s everything you need to do to be able to join. First of all, let’s start by saying that in order to join the ranks of Ryujin Industries you must be hired. Then, complete the Back to the Grind mission and head to Neon City to apply for a job offer at the Ryujin Industries Kiosk.
Once you submit your application (much like it happens in the real world), you will have to take part in an interview with Imogene Salzo at Ryujin Tower. Although you will be asked questions, your answers will not carry much weight as you will be hired anyway. Once you are hired, you can start working for this faction and therefore complete all its missions.
Starfield’s minor factions
In addition to the five main factions, there are also other minor factions in Starfield. Among them, only three are joinable, but only if you have chosen that specific trait during the creation of your character. Here listed there are some of them.
Enlightened
It is one of the three religious factions present in the game. The followers of this faction are atheists who do not believe in the presence of a God and believe that the focal point of man’s life is man himself and therefore does not have to worry about the presence of superior powers. You can join this faction if you have chosen the corresponding trait.
Sanctum Universum
This is also a faction linked to religion. Their belief is that a God really exists somewhere in the universe and that he is trying to make it possible for humans to explore the universe with the possibility of meeting him (or her) one day. You can join this faction if you have chosen the corresponding trait.
House Va’ruun
This is the last of the three religious factions present in Starfield. This faction worships a huge serpent that originated from a human ship and has sworn war against humanity. You can join this faction if you have chosen the corresponding trait.
Spacers
This faction is used to refer to all groups of space raiders that are not affiliated in any way with the Crimson Fleet.
Trade Authority
This is a faction made up of sellers who buy and sell any type of goods, including (and above all) contraband.
Argos Extractors
This is the mining company you work for as soon as you start the game.
Ecliptic Mercenaries
They are space mercenaries. They too, like the Spacers, can be found in different structures and planets, the substantial difference lies in the fact that they are, in fact, mercenaries.
Xenofresh Corporation
It is a corporation that studies marine animals present on the various planets that populate the Starfield universe.
