Ahead of the rumored FF9 remake, Square Enix has “various projects” for the RPG

If you’ve been waiting for even a crumb from Square Enix concerning the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, I’ve got good news. The RPG maker has launched a new website celebrating the beloved game’s upcoming 25th anniversary, with plenty of merchandise and collaboration plans to look forward to. There could be even more coming, though, as the developer says it has “various projects” in the works, and this may very well include an FF9 remake.

Final Fantasy 9 turns 25 years old on Monday July 7, 2025. To mark the occasion, Square Enix has launched an all-new website filled with info, merch, and teases of how it’ll celebrate one of the most fondly remembered games in the FF series. There’s a collaboration with eyeglass company Zoff, a new prequel picture book, soundtrack vinyl, and a whole lot more to get excited over. The RPG is back in a big way, and Square Enix could finally be teasing the remake we’ve all been waiting for.

“Final Fantasy 9, which was released on July 7, 2000, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025,” Square Enix writes. “We are preparing various projects, including merchandise and collaborations to commemorate the 25th anniversary, so please look forward to it!”

While there’s no official mention of a Final Fantasy 9 remake on the anniversary website, the project has been bouncing around the rumor mill for several years. With FF7 already well into its own series of reimaginings, then, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a new version of FF9 is coming.

To put on my tinfoil hat, for a moment, Square Enix may even be releasing the game alongside Nintendo’s Switch 2. The hybrid console is set for a full reveal on Wednesday April 2 and a launch sometime in 2025, so it’s perfectly possible that a Final Fantasy 9 remake could be an early release for the console.

If you’re worried about what that means for PC, don’t be. Final Fantasy 16’s director has already said it’s “likely” that new FF games will come to PC on day one, and Square Enix itself says it will start to “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy.” The developer and publisher has long prioritized launching games on Sony’s PlayStation systems first, but that appears to be coming to an end.
