Players on Xbox Series S considering working through the Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake achievements should be aware that the game doesn’t seem to be performing quite so well on the console. According to a recent analysis, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is severely underperforming on Xbox Series S, with resolutions dropping as low as 450p in some instances. If that doesn’t cut it for you, check out our list of the best action-adventure games on Xbox for some other fantastic games to play.Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is an adventure game featuring two brothers on an adventure through a magical world to find a cure for their dying father. You control both siblings simultaneously with the left and right toggles on your controller or with a co-op partner, leading them through the treacherous world. It was an instant classic when it launched on Xbox 360 in 2013, which led to it receiving a remaster for Xbox One in 2015. Now it’s been remastered once again for Xbox Series X|S by developer Aventgarden, using Unreal Engine 5 and its Lumen and Nanite technologies, but it seems to come with a cost on both consoles.Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake struggles on Xbox Series SAs reported by Digital Foundry, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake makes use of two modes like many other Xbox Series X|S games: Quality and Performance. Quality Mode generally lowers frame rates so it can boost the graphical fidelity and resolution of a game, and in this instance, the game also uses dynamic resolution, which gives the game the ability to lower its resolution during busy scenes to keep your gameplay smooth. On Xbox Series X, Digital Foundry says, “4K may be the target here, but it’s rarely if ever in sight,” as its resolution generally ranges between 1620p and 1260p with a framerate of 30fps. On the Xbox Series S, meanwhile, things are somewhat dire. While it tends to “rest at the upper end, at 720p,” it can drop as abysmally low as “454p” to keep the game running at an almost locked 30fps.As for Performance Mode, which usually does the opposite of Quality Mode by lowering the game’s resolution in favor of higher framerates, generally 60fps, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake only really manages that target during its second chapter on Xbox Series X. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 versions typically sit with a resolution of 1080p, but neither manages to hit the targeted 60fps outside of Chapter 2.On Xbox Series S, resolutions stay between 454p and 720p, “but understandably is on the lower end of that scale much more frequently,” Digital Foundry says. Quality Mode seems to be the best option for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, especially if you’re playing on the Xbox Series S. While we’ve heard Microsoft’s lower-spec console be referred to as an “albatross around the neck of production” before, leading to games underperforming on Xbox Series X, in this case, it sounds like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is just a little too ambitious with its use of new Unreal Engine 5 technologies.
