Square Enix has confirmed in an investor briefing that it still owns the Just Cause IP and has quietly announced that a new Just Cause title is in the works.Avalanche Studios’ Just Cause series is a staple in the open-world game genre, and the level of player freedom it champions has helped it grow a following of shenanigans-loving fans. It’s strange, then, that for a game so embroiled in freedom that Square Enix decided to reveal Just Cause 5, or at least a new series entry, via its investor briefing and not during Summer Game Fest later this week. Of course, there could well be a big reveal in the coming days, but the cat’s kind of out of the bag now. Just Cause 5 development revealedIt’s been almost four years since Just Cause 4 launched and we’ve not heard anything from Avalanche Studios or Square Enix since, well until now, at least. The confirmation was spotted by the keen-eyed folks on ResetEra (thanks, PCGamesN), and while the reveal doesn’t reveal much about the upcoming game, it does state that “the Just Cause franchise will remain our IP,” along with the confirmation that Square Enix is “developing a new title in the franchise.”Embracer Group’s recent acquisition of many Square Enix’s Western studios and IPs like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex didn’t include Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios because Square Enix doesn’t own it. We’d say it’s likely that Avalanche will be working on this mysterious newcomer, since the studio has worked on each series entry to date, but until its upcoming Contraband game sees the light of day, the chances of seeing anything solid are fairly remote. We could of course see an early reveal during the publisher’s Summer Game Fest showcase, so that’s something to look forward to. A recent Avalanche job listing states that the studio’s working on an unannounced “cutting-edge triple-A open-world game,” so there is a good chance that this is the title in question. We won’t blame you if you’ve not heard of Avalanche Studios’ Contraband before. It was announced during last year’s Xbox Showcase as an Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass title, but the studio has been tight-lipped on it ever since. We might learn a little more about the “co-op smuggler’s paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan,” during this year’s showcase, though, so fingers crossed. Will you be looking forward to playing another Just Cause game? Let us know down in the comments!
