St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt used the final day of May to set a new franchise record for the most extra-base hits in the month.

It’s Paul Goldschmidt’s world and Cardinals fans are just living in it.

The outstanding first baseman finished May off with a bang by etching his name in the St. Louis record books.

He now has the most extra-base hits for a Cardinals player in the month of May ever.

Paul Goldschmidt makes Cardinals history

Goldschmidt got his 28th extra-base hit of season on Tuesday against the Padres. It was his 23rd of the month and the record-breaker.

It also put the Cardinals up 1-0 over San Diego. Goldschmidt would got on to score later in the inning on an Albert Pujols sacrifice fly, making it 2-0.

The Padres tied things up in the eighth with a two-run home run, but Pujols played the hero once again with another sacrifice fly to score the winning run.

Goldschmidt will go into June as one of baseball’s top performers so far this season. He leads the league in runs created, adjusted batting runs and adjusted batting wins. He’s also sixth in overall WAR, fourth in OBPS and third in RBIs.

His May production was outrageous, batting .406/.465/.822 with an OPS of 1.287 going into the final night of the month.

With Goldschmidt balling out, the Cardinals have been able to keep the Brewers in sight at the top of the NL Central.

They’ll look to close out a sweep of the Padres on Wednesday before heading on the road for a five-game series against the Cubs.
