Microsoft Flight Simulator’s entry into Xbox Cloud Gaming made it the most played cloud-enabled game in March, which is no small feat as Microsoft pushes its Xbox Everywhere initiative.Xbox Everywhere is Microsoft’s vision for reaching three billion players globally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming is at the forefront of its plans. The service is only available to players with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription and allows you to play many games from the Game Pass catalogue on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Android, iOS, PC, and Steam Deck devices by streaming it from the cloud. Epic Games’ Fortnite has just become the first non-Game Pass title to be used via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft has revealed that Microsoft Flight Simulator was the most played cloud title through March.Xbox Cloud Gaming and Microsoft Flight SimulatorThe recent Xbox Wire post from Xbox Cloud Gaming boss, Catherine Gluckstein, revealed some interesting statistics for service. The most notable of which is that Microsoft Flight Simulator “became the most played cloud game on phones, tablets, PCs and consoles for the month of March.” The game’s success is thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming giving players on other devices the opportunity to play, what Microsoft calls “Gen-9” games, which are games optimised for Xbox Series X|S consoles. “I’ll never forget the first time I played a console game on my mobile phone powered by the cloud; it was quite simply a magical experience,” Gluckstein says. “That was many years ago as we’ve been on this cloud journey for some time alongside a wonderful and engaged player community and incredible content partners. Together, we believe we have a bright future ahead for all players and creators.”In the two years since Xbox Cloud Gaming launched in 2020, the service has seen more than 125 developers enable cloud gaming on over 350 Xbox Game Pass titles. More than 150 of those games feature touch controls — either as an overlay or as a custom control system — and Gluckstein says: “On average, we see x2 increase in play for games that have touch controls, and 20% of Xbox Cloud Gaming users use touch exclusively.” With the announcement of Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming Organisation back in March, we expect to see many more titles with built-in touch controls arrive in the future.Gluckstein notes that the Cloud Gaming library of games is thriving thanks in no small part to the “lift-and-shift model.” The model allows studios to make games cloud-compatible without having to change the game’s code; they “simply just work on our cloud platform.”Do you use Xbox Cloud Gaming often and if you do, are touch controls a deciding factor?
