Voice chat has finally arrived in Battlefield 2042 five months after it launched in November last year. The feature won’t let you speak with everyone online, though, as channels are limited to either Squad or Party chats. It arrives in Battlefield 2042’s Update 4.0 update, coming today, April 19, which includes hundreds of other fixes and adjustments as detailed in developer DICE’s latest blog post. The update is headlined by voice chat, or VOIP (voice over internet protocol), which has been one of the most highly requested features since launch, and which some players believe should have always been in the game.Other changes include a UI refresh of the scoreboard (that was first added last month), balance updates to specialists, weapons, and vehicles, and an improved progression system that allows Ribbons to be more easily unlocked.Players’ experience with Battlefield 2042 has been fairly turbulent so far as it launched with myriad issues and quickly became one of Steam’s worst reviewed games despite being very popular.Player numbers have since diminished though as in March 2042 was less popular than Battlefields 1, 4, and 5 on Steam, and publisher EA has admitted the game did not meet expectations. While Update 4.0 does make hundreds of changes, other issues such as “walking simulator” style maps persist in Battlefield 2042 and won’t be addressed until summer 2022 at the earliest, around the same time that its delayed Season 1 Battle Pass will arrive.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer who occasionally remembers to tweet @thelastdinsdale. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.
