Galactic Civilizations IV’s new Mimot race will conquer with cuteness

We’re taking a break from the moody Drengin and scrappy Terrans to return to another one of the brand-new races coming to space-based 4X game Galactic Civilizations IV: the Mimot Brotherhood. They’re cute, they’re unassuming, and they will breed the galaxy out of existence if you’re not careful. They’ve been available to play in the space strategy game for a while, so if you’re interested you can pre-order today to get instant access to the beta and take them for a spin.

These furry spacefarers may lack the Arcean Republic’s military prowess or the Xeloxi’s affinity for stealing anything not nailed to the hull plating, but they more than make up for it with sheer numbers, courtesy of their Fertile ability. You will never lack for citizens with the Mimot Brotherhood, although the food to feed them may always be in short supply.

Thankfully, their other ability – Proliferation – states that whenever a ship is constructed, two are made at the same time. This means you’ll have plenty of colony ships and constructors with which you can ship off those unwanted children to somewhere far, far away. Unfortunately, this ability also applies a -25% health reduction to all Mimot ships, which means you’ll have to swarm your enemies if you want to compete militarily.

These two core traits of the Mimot Brotherhood unlock special policies that can be enacted from the start. The first decreases construction costs but makes maintenance more expensive, and the second provides a massive growth boost – along with a small approval boost – for just a quarter of your regular income. You know, just in case you were worrying that there weren’t enough Mimots in the galaxy.

To support all these Mimots, you’re going to need food. Unfortunately, their homeworld of Fen will only help up to a certain point. There are some food boosting hexes – including one +3 tile – but there are just as many hexes that will boost production, research, and approval. You will then need to explore and find new worlds with high food output to support your explosive population.

This is where the Brotherhood’s own brace of command ships and their special abilities may come in handy:

  • Wisp: this tiny ship is impressively armed for its size and will gain additional move points as it levels up. Great for recon.
  • Appeleur: a small ship that can spawn free probes.
  • Puca: a decent small beam ship that has a 75% chance to escape battle.
  • Loireag: a medium ship with modest armaments that can clone itself. No reason needed, it’s just cool.
  • Harpazein: a medium-sized ship with a decent kinetic attack and defences for all three weapon types. It also has a special ‘Antimatter Bomb’ attack that will damage all enemy fleets within a 1-tile radius.
  • Dullahan: despite its hull size, this ship is quite weak, but it can spawn transports that provide you with free travel for your legions of soldiers.
  • The Gruff: a large ship with a modest beam and missile attack, but its main function is spawning unlimited Gunboats.

These ships may not be able to help with your population issues, but they will help ensure that you get the numbers to secure space superiority, as well provide plenty of transportation for your invading armies.

The Mimots’ default trait loadout will give them additional advantages as well. Their furry exterior and diminutive stature is sure to remind everyone of their favourite childhood pet, so it’s only fair that the Mimots gain a hefty diplomacy bonus. Mimot citizens also enjoy a production boost to aid in their endless pursuit of more, well… everything.

The galaxy’s newest civilization of furry friends is here to make its mark on the series. Provided you can manage their never-ending food crises, you’ll be in for a fun time as you wait to see how long it takes the galaxy to notice that your citizens are popping up everywhere at an alarming rate. Just make sure you don’t hand the Festron too many free meals.
