Doom Eternal’s long-awaited Invasion Mode has been cancelled due to the pandemic and remote working slowing the mode’s development. Instead, id Software will add a new single-player horde mode to the first-person shooter. In a statement posted on Twitter, Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton said “unforseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working” had affected development on Eternal’s Invasion Mode. “Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels,” Stratton continues. “With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode.”Stratton hasn’t revealed much on Eternal’s new horde mode but is confident it will bring more diversity and challenge to the game. The team is also working on refreshing Battlemode, bringing in a rank-based structure to make it more competitive, some gameplay and balance updates, and a new map.Doom Eternal’s Invasion Mode was similar to player invasions in the Dark Souls games. Other players would have been able to invade your campaign, taking control of various demons and making your playthrough that much more challenging via some PvP. It’s a shame this mode won’t materialise as it sounds like an interesting feature. id Software says it will share more on Doom Eternal at QuakeCon in August. Last week, id Software rolled out a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade for Doom Eternal, which added three new graphics modes, ray tracing, and more.
