Frontier Developments has announced it is cancelling all future development on the console version of Elite Dangerous, including the delayed Odyssey expansion.Frontier delayed the much-anticipated Odyssey update for consoles back in January last year to focus on the PC version of the game. Odyssey eventually did release for PC but never made it to consoles. In a statement on the Elite Dangerous website, Frontier Developments CEO David Braben explains that since Odyssey’s PC release in May 2021, the team has been supporting both “pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases.” However, other than “critical updates,” Braben says Frontier is now dropping the console version of the game entirely. “Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development,” Braben says. “We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase. “We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.”On Twitter, disgruntled console players have asked the developer if it would be possible to transfer their Elite Dangerous accounts to PC, so they can continue playing. At the moment, Frontier Developments says it is “exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce. Are you disappointed with the news?
