Metacritic has now announced the results of its 12th Annual Game Publisher Rankings, and for 2021, Microsoft is Metactritic’s publisher of the year, beating out Sony in second place. Xbox Game Studios scored an average Metascore of 87.4 for the ten products (five games released across different formats) it published in 2021. As per Metacritic’s rankings (thanks, VGC), 100% of these games were rated as ‘good’ and three titles — Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, and the Xbox Series X|S version of Microsoft Flight Simulator — achieved a Metascore of 90 or higher, were rated as ‘great.’Metacritic says, “Microsoft certainly published fewer titles in 2021 than it does in a typical year. But what games it did publish were uniformly excellent, making Microsoft the only publisher with a 100% success rate.”Also according to Metacritic, Microsoft is also the first-ever publisher to average over 85 Metascore for the titles it published in a year. In 2020, Microsoft previously came in 6th, so it appears to have made quite the jump in the rankings. Sony finished second in the rankings with an average Metascore of 81.3 for its 2021 releases. Sony released 11 products throughout the year, with ten being separate games. None of these titles were rated as ‘great’ (with an average Metascore of 90 or above) by Metacritic, but ten were rated as ‘good’ with the exception of Destruction All-Stars, which only managed a Metascore of 62. In 2020, Sony previously finished in fourth. Elsewhere in the rankings, Humble Games came third, Activision Blizzard fourth, and Bethesda Softworks finished in fifth.
