Giants wide receiver John Ross was just as impressed with Tyquan Thornton’s insane 40-yard dash time, even if it broke his NFL Combine record.
Donte’ Stallworth’s NFL Combine record for the fastest 40-yard dash time stood for 15 years before John Ross broke it in 2017.
Ross’s own record lasted just five years before being (apparently) broken.
On Thursday, Baylor’s Tyquan Thornton ran an unofficial 40-yard dash in just 4.21 seconds. If that unofficial time stands, it’ll crown Thornton as the fastest man in Combine history.
How did the former Washington star react?
John Ross responds to Tyquan Thornton’s record-breaking 40-yard dash
Ross took it well, praising Thornton as a “blazer!”
Ross also had a message for people on Twitter who expected a different response.
“Yall crazy to think id be mad over him breaking it im happy for bro lol honestly that’s fr!!” Ross tweeted.
He went on to tell another user, “They meant to be broken lol.”
Ross’s ridiculous speed earned him the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He went on to play for the Bengals but never lived up to his selection. He played just three games as a rookie and had his best season in 2019 with 506 yards on 28 receptions while playing just eight games.
In 2021, he signed a one-year contract with the Giants and caught 11 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown.
Thornton was a four-star prospect in the class of 2018 and featured for four years at Baylor. His senior season was his brightest with 948 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He hasn’t generated very much draft buzz before now but you can bet he’s upped his stock with that run. After all, 6-foot-3 receivers who can run a 4.21 40 don’t just grow on trees.
