Assassin’s Creed III was going to end with… a spaceship?

According to a recent paper written by a PhD student, Assassin’s Creed III was originally going to end with Desmond and Lucy boarding a spaceship after taking down Abstergo… yes, maybe it’s best that they decided against it.This interesting news comes from Lars de Wildt, a PhD student who researches conspiracy theories, religion, and other beliefs in digital media culture (thanks, Eurogamer). According to de Wildt’s latest paper, an interview with Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets and Assassin’s Creed III’s creative director Alex Hutchenson has uncovered that the game was going to end and close out the trilogy with a spaceship. “Briefly put, the third game would end with a resolution of the conflict in the present day, with Desmond Miles taking down Abstergo using the combined knowledge and skills of all his ancestors, including AC 1’s Altair and AC 2’s Ezio,” de Wildt says in a footnote. The story would have also included the Mayan calendar prediction of the world ending in 2012, which de Wildt touches on: “Also, it is the end of the world in 2012, and Desmond Miles and Lucy are starting a new civilization somewhere else – as Adam and Eve.”According to Assassin’s Creed creator, Patrice Desilets, the plan was to have the story end with them leaving earth — “Boom! It’s a freaking spaceship,” says Desilets. “That’s why she’s called Lucy, after the Australopithecus afarensis.” Eurogamer says that the game’s creative director Alex Hutchenson recalled speaking to the student and that the game was originally intended to end in a modern-day showdown with Desmond at the centre. Yep, the original Assassin’s Creed trilogy could have ended in a completely different way than we have actually experienced. Whether or not it’s for the better is down to your own preferences, but we’re pretty happy that space travel was left out of the series. What do you think? Would you have liked the game to have ended that way? Let us know down below!
