Games are cancelled all the time for one reason or another, and when you’re EA, the reason is almost always money. Which is essentially why we never got to see the Harry Potter MMO that EA had in the works. The news came out during an interview with Kim Salzer, who worked at EA from 2000-2003 as the director of product marketing. She was asked which was the one project she remembers that she would have loved to see happen, but it just never did.“A big one for me, because I was so personally involved in it, and it’s such a big IP that has lived on is an online massively multiplayer game for Harry Potter. We did all the research, we had the beta built on it, it was a combination of offline/online experience where we’d actually mail stuff to the kids, like prizes and ribbons and that.”Just based on the size of Harry Potter today, it’s doubtful that an MMO based on the franchise wouldn’t be able to make money, right? That’s not what EA’s executives thought.“Thoroughly researched, very confident in the success of this. But it was killed, for lack of a better term, because EA was going through changes at that time and they just didn’t know or believe enough that that IP would have a shelf-life longer than a year or two.”I guess we’ll never know, since it never happened! If you are still craving for a Potter gaming fix though, you can continue to look forward to Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming RPG based on the IP.Source – [VGC]
