New Root DLC The Marauder Expansion has arrived, bringing another two factions to the digital version of the beloved tabletop strategy game. The Steam release of Root is a fantastic adaptation of the board version, with slick, charming visuals bringing it to life. With the game’s asymmetric factions a huge part of the draw, each demanding a unique approach, adding more is a great way to expand the variety of your games, and this latest expansion pack is a fantastic addition to the lineup.

The core of this latest expansion to make its way to the PC version of Root are two additional factions to use in the strategy game. The first of these is the terrifying Lord of the Hundreds, ratty masters of oppression that score points by overrunning and dominating the map. Led by a powerful warlord with a love for hoarding loot, they aim to clear out every trace of their enemies, razing buildings and the woodland to the ground with their mobs in search of domination.

The Keepers in Iron, meanwhile, bring a different spin on conquest. This order of devout badger knights is here to reclaim lost relics – although whether they belonged to the Keepers in the first place might be up for debate. Their job is to uncover relic tokens, scoring points by completing specific sets, and they’re bolstered by their army of loyal warriors who are capable of shrugging off hits altogether.

To help you get to grips with these newcomers and their particular nuances, there is a set of tutorials for both factions. You’ll also encounter a range of additional challenges, with both normal and heroic difficulty settings to put your tactical nous to the test. Root’s greatest strength is just how differently each of its factions plays, and these are two real winners that you’ll want to try out now they’re available on the PC version.

Root: The Marauder Expansion is out now on Steam, priced at $9.99 / £8.50. You’ll need to own the base game to make use of it – you can find that right here along with the new DLC.
