Team17’s World War II shooter has had a great couple of weeks, as the Hell Let Loose player count has surged on Xbox since December. We’ve seen an 80% increase in players unlocking the Hell Let Loose achievements since the start of the year, and a couple of factors could be behind the Xbox first-person shooter’s renewed success.Hell Let Loose Xbox players rise following Epic Games Store giveawayHell Let Loose Xbox players have increased by 80% since DecemberHell Let Loose was recently an Epic Games Store freebie and player counts across PC platforms appear to have significantly increased since the offerHell Let Loose was half-price during the Xbox Countdown Sale in DecemberAccording to our Xbox Gameplay Chart data, which uses a sample size of over 2.4 million Xbox accounts courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights, the Xbox player count for Hell Let Loose has jumped by an impressive 80% since December 23, 2024. While it’s tough to pin down the exact cause of the brilliant shooter’s new resurgence, it could be down to two reasons: a recent Epic Games Store giveaway and the Xbox Countdown Sale in December. In December, the Xbox store had its massive annual Xbox Countdown Sale, giving Hell Let Loose and Hell Let Loose: Deluxe Edition a 50% discount on Xbox Series X|S and PC. While it was a great discount, it’s likely not enough of a steal to draw in such a large chunk of new players, especially as the game is available via Xbox Game Pass. The most likely cause of the huge surge in players is, we think, down to an offer from a rival PC store. Between January 2, 2025, and January 9, 2025, Hell Let Loose was free on the Epic Games Store, and it was during this period we saw a big spike in players on Xbox. It would seem that a lot of PC Game Pass players have returned to the shooter or picked it up for the first time to play with their pals on the Epic Games store via cross-play. Although cross-play is available in Hell Let Loose, it’s limited to platforms of the same type. Xbox Series X|S players can only cross-play with PS5 players, and the PC community can only cross-play between the Microsoft, Steam, and Epic Games stores. Before the Epic Games Store started giving away Hell Let Loose, the shooter was the 68th most-played Xbox game in our Xbox Gameplay Chart on December 23, 2024. Two weeks later, and in our latest Gameplay Chart, Hell Let Loose has reentered the top 40 in 34th — the shooter has 80% more Xbox players this week than it did in December. While we usually wouldn’t expect the PC player base to lead the charge in our Xbox Gameplay Chart, Steam also saw a huge spike in Hell Let Loose players during the same period, so we expect it’s the same situation for Xbox players on PC. On January 9, 2025, the official Hell Let Loose X account shared that it recorded an all-time peak concurrent players record on Steam with a whopping 20,388 players. More impressively, a new record for peak concurrent players across all platforms (Xbox and PlayStation included) was also set, with over 140,000 players all fighting in the World War II shooter. It’s great to see such a boost in players for a three-year-old game and not solely link it to Xbox Game Pass. If you’re yet to try Hell Let Loose — and fancy trying something new while you wait for the many upcoming Game Pass games — it can be played on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Xbox Game Pass Standard, Ultimate, and PC.
