A new Game of Thrones RPG? Count me in. A new Game of Thrones RPG that’s getting a PC beta extremely soon? Count me in for that, too. Game of Thrones Kingsroad may not be the giant, triple-A, make-your-graphics-card-sweat game that we all hoped it would be, but its debut gameplay trailer does show some signs of promise, and you’ll be able to try it out for yourself very soon.
Game of Thrones feels like one of those huge IPs that has been criminally underserved when it comes to videogames. Telltale’s narrative adventures were decent, but aside from that, there’ve been a few mobile games here, a couple of attempts at strategy games there, and one dismal RPG launched pretty soon after the HBO series blew up. So when it was announced that a new Game of Thrones RPG was in the works, you could imagine my excitement. However, while Game of Thrones Kingsroad is going to launch on PC via Windows Launcher, it’s been primarily built with mobile devices in mind, so my expectations were immediately tempered – this is not going to be some genre-defining fantasy RPG to rival the likes of Elden Ring, by any stretch. Nevertheless, in its debut gameplay trailer, Kingsroad actually looks a lot better than I anticipated, so maybe not all hope is lost.
Character models for characters from the series, such as Olenna Tyrell, are surprisingly detailed. The environments look well-dressed and the open-world of Westeros is big enough to justify travel on horseback. There’s some parkour-y traversal too. The melee and ranged combat looks fairly varied. We also get a glimpse at a mysterious side quest and a bounty system. All in all, it’s actually looking pretty decent.
In preparation for the Assassin’s Creed Shadows release date next month, I’m currently dipping back into AC Valhalla, and Kingsroad certainly gives similar vibes – not a bad point of comparison, given that it’s built to run on mobile devices.
As well as dropping the gameplay trailer, developer Netmarble also confirms that a closed beta will be arriving next week. It’ll take place across Windows and Android, and only those in the US, Canada, and Europe are eligible to sign up. If you are selected and fill out a survey after the beta, you’ll earn yourself a cosmetic item for your horse that will be redeemable in the full version of the RPG.
The Game of Thrones Kingsroad beta begins on Thursday, January 16 and ends on Wednesday, January 22. You can sign up here, but registration closes on January 12, so don’t dally if you do want to give it a try.
Kingsroad will fully launch some time in 2025, but until then, why not take a look at some other sensational fantasy games and open-world games.
