What to expect from AMD’s CES keynote
Rumors have been flying for weeks regarding AMD’s CES 2025 announcements, with the biggest rumors centring on its new RX 9070 XT graphics cards. Based on a new RDNA 4 architecture, the new card isn’t expected to compete with the upcoming RTX 5090 for graphics card supremacy but will instead battle it out with the RTX 5070 as a hopefully great mid-range GPU option.
The new card is expected to have improved ray tracing performance, even more AI processing power, with performance that will rival that of the current RTX 4080.
Elsewhere, the company’s much-rumored Strix Halo mobile chip is also expected to debut, bringing a massive 40 compute unit GPU right onto a single die alongside the CPU. This could make for incredibly powerful gaming laptops that are smaller, lighter, and more efficient than ever before.
A new gaming handheld CPU is also anticipated, in the shape of the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme. A direct followup to the Z1 Extreme that powers the Asus ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go, the new chip should be more efficient and powerful, just in time for a possible Steam Deck 2 later this year?
Finally, there’s also talk of new dekstop CPUs, in the shape of 16-core versions of the company’s incredibly successful AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Expected to marry a massive core count and high clock speed with the company’s 3D V-Cache technology, they could be an ideal balance of gaming performance and multi-core processing.
