If you’re not yet convinced that Sony’s toying with a new PlayStation handheld, the latest report from an unlikely source might change your mind. Digital Foundry sticks to tech coverage and has rarely ever “leaked” anything, but following a number of credible reports, the outlet has confirmed that it, too, has heard about PlayStation’s new portable.
PlayStation handheld might be further along in development than we thought
Digital Foundry’s John Linneman revealed that the team heard about PlayStation’s new portable several months ago, so it was privy to Sony’s plans ahead of the recent Bloomberg leak. Prior to this, the handheld’s existence was alluded to by known leaker, Tom Henderson. However, original reports date as far back as February 2024.
According to Linneman, it seems like the handheld’s development is a little further along than early leaks had suggested. “We’re not in the business of leaking things, but it’s interesting that this finally, sort of, started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record about this existing,” Linneman said (via Reddit) before adding that he thinks “there’s, like, prototype stuff out there.”
While we don’t know if something will pan out or not, the general consensus is that handhelds are going to be an important part of next-gen console offerings.
