The Civilization games have long been a cornerstone of the turn-based strategy genre. If you’ve always wanted to try them out, or just want to plug some gaps in your collection, a new Humble Bundle encompasses most of the series. It includes Civilization 3, 4, 5, and 6 (plus DLCs) for only $18 / £13.86 – and some of the profits go towards helping the homeless and research against Parkinson’s disease.
With Civilization 6 and all the DLCs, you can get the definitive series experience without having to shill out for extras. Civilization 7 will almost certainly take the crown when it arrives, but until then, it’s Civ 6 that deserves one of the top spots on our best strategy games list.
Each civilization (or ‘civ’) gives you a nifty bonus through the character and their attached culture. For example, Gitarja allows you to buy naval units with faith, so you can rule archipelagos and coastlines. Gitarja’s Indonesian culture gives you access to the mighty Jong, a powerful naval unit in the medieval era. She’s one of the characters who was added in the Khmer & Indonesia Double Civilization & Scenario Park, which fortunately enough, is included in the bundle.
Unlike a lot of other series, the older Civilization games have not been made redundant with the arrival of shiny new additions. Civ 4 offers a unique method for stacking military units, while Civ 3 includes a popular palace-building feature. They all have their quirks and are well worth playing. I can personally confirm that the multiplayer modes still work great on them all too.
But regardless of which entry or DLC you play, they’re all 4x games that require you to manage your resources including gold, faith, productivity, science, and culture which can grow or shrink every turn.
The Sid Meier Collection Humble Bundle also gives you a chance to get your hands on Sid Meier’s lesser-known games, including Pirates! This swashbuckling game offers humor, pillaging, and an array of pirates who are up to no good. It is definitely worth checking out the Sid Meier Collection for all the games it contains, not just Civ.
This bundle is available until Thursday, November 28, 2024. With the Civilization 7 release date just around the corner, now might be the best time to find out why the series has been so popular for so long.
