Counter-Strike 2 has already given several incredible CSGO maps a fresh coat of paint, but there’s a fan-favorite that’s been surprisingly absent from the FPS game. Home to so many memories, players have been missing the abandoned railyard of Train. Well, after a few sneaky teasers last week, Valve has just dropped a surprise CS2 update that brings Train into the map pool – and it’s looking more atmospheric than ever.
Train is a great, compact map and one of the most iconic arenas in not just the history of Counter-Strike but in FPS games as a whole. Present in 1.6, Source, and Global Offensive, it has witnessed everything from some of the all-time great plays in CSGO esports down to that clip of Jaryd ‘Summit1g’ Lazar’s infamous molotov death. Finally, after a few teasers, it has arrived in CS2, but not without some changes.
The most obvious is the visual overhaul, which not only portrays the map in CS2’s enhanced graphics, but gives it new, gloomier weather too. A sky full of grey clouds now looms overhead and showers of rain create puddles and splashes on the ground.
Valve also teases in its announcement post that there have been some alterations to Train’s layout. “There’s plenty of classic Counter-Strike in every inch of this map – but we also made sure to mix up the gameplay a bit to keep you Train veterans on your toes,” it says.
Train is live right now in CS2 and has been added to the competitive, casual, and Deathmatch modes.
Today’s update doesn’t just introduce Train, however. The lineup of CS2 maps is getting a further shakeup as community maps Thera, Mills, Assembly, and Momento are removed and replaced with four newcomers – Basalt and Edin join Train in casual and competitive modes, while Palais and Whistle have been added to Wingman.
Alongside a smattering of bug fixes for other existing maps, Overpass has been given a pretty big update based on community feedback. Over 20 tweaks have been made to the map, including new objects that block bad sight lines, removing objects that mess with visibility, and various other small layout changes.
