Real world farming game Global Farmer now lets you draw fields on your home

There’s been a few games that have explored using real world map data as a background for the action. From Microsoft Flight Simulator to Infection Free Zone, playing around the places you know has become a thing you can easily do. In Global Farmer you can turn your hometown into a farm, taking a big slice of Farming Simulator and adding a dash of reality into the mix thanks to map data from OpenStreetMap. Now it has received its first major update, and it contains some big features fans have been clamoring for.

The biggest part of this first update for Global Farmer is a feature that unlocks even more freedom for your farming empire. Previously, while you could farm anywhere, you were restricted to only purchasing fields that had already been placed. Now, you can draw your own fields across the entire globe, making this farming game much more open. Also I’m sure the more creative among you can use that information to put down some fields over your hometown in some… interesting… shapes. It’s ok, we’re not judging.

In addition to that, clarity about your different storage types has been tightened up. A new UI element will tell you exactly how much storage you have left, even letting you know if you have the storage available for incoming harvests. Weather’s also been made more clear over time, so you can see at a glance what the upcoming months have in store for you.

There’s a new tractor model giving you an old-timey feel for your farms, a rebalancing of many elements such as crop prices, tractor performance, and more, and you can also find a smattering of bug fixes to feast upon.

Update 1 for Global Farmer is out now. If you’d like to check out exactly what’s new, head over to the Steam announcement to get the complete lowdown. It’s been a few weeks since the game launched into early access, and it’s great to see it already listening deeply to fans as it builds upon its core offering.
