New Crusader Kings 3 Wandering Nobles DLC met with rocky reception

Over the years Paradox has had a rocky time with DLC. While some expansions and DLC packs have gone over extremely well with the strategy community, such as Holy Fury for Crusader Kings 2 or Art of War for Europa Universalis 4, it’s fair to say the publisher has been raked over the coals a few times too. The latest DLC for Crusader Kings 3, Wandering Nobles, is no exception and is already beginning to struggle right after launch. It’s currently sitting on a ‘mixed’ rating on Steam with a backlash brewing among fans.

If you’re not familiar with the Wandering Nobles DLC for Crusader Kings 3, it adds a brand new Lifestyle which will propel you out onto the wider roads. There’s a few different motivations for making like a hobbit and wandering out the door, such as being an Inspector who wants to check in with their lands, or the Wayfarer who simply likes to roam across the 4X game’s map. This release also coincides with a free update that brings ale to your people, with new breweries able to spread the joy of fermentation.

There doesn’t appear to be any particular complaints about the content of the Wandering Nobles DLC itself, with positive reviews praising the amount of events you can experience when wandering and simply stating satisfaction with the DLC’s price point. “TONS of new events when you’re traveling. A whole new focus tree, and a couple new activities that you can do,” reads a positive review. “There are plenty of DLC to find lacking and disappointing in the CK series and Paradox as a whole. This is not one of them,” another says.

Negative reviews, however, point instead to the previous expansion for Crusader Kings 3, with the growing perception that this release should have been included in it. “I think this should’ve been lumped in with the last DLC. Just another way for Paradox to milk more money from your pockets as per usual,” reads one popular review. “I honestly love the idea of surveying your lands as a noble. This should have been added to the last DLC though. A five dollar Roblox gift card probably offers more content than this DLC,” reads another.

It’s somewhat understandable that the community would feel this way, as the Roads to Power expansion does feel linked to Wandering Nobles – thematically, anyway. Both focus on roaming around the world of Crusader Kings 3, unshackling characters from their homes. That said, this DLC does offer something different, looking at providing reasons for nobles to move around rather than playing as a landless adventurer, free as the wind.

The Crusader Kings 3 Wandering Nobles DLC is out now. At the time of writing 66% of reviews are positive, but if you’d like to make up your own mind, head over to Steam to check it out for yourself.
