Portable gaming monitors aren’t a brand new concept, but they’re still not a common sight, and this new model from Viewsonic could be ideal for Steam Deck and other gaming handheld gamers looking for an easy way to game on a larger screen while charging your device, and without breaking the bank.

With the best gaming handheld devices proving ever more popular for gaming at home and away, they’ve even ended up replacing some people’s main gaming PC. For just those sorts of gamers, a portable screen like the new Viewsonic VX54 range could be a perfect partner for their Steam Deck.

The device is available in two variants. There’s the 16-inch VX1654 and 17-inch VX1754, which seems like a surprisingly small size difference to even bother with but, regardless, they otherwise feature identical specs. Both displays use an IPS LCD screen with a 144Hz maximum refresh rate and a 1,920 x 1,080 (1080p) resolution. That’s plenty of pixels and speed for the GPUs built into most gaming handhelds.

Making these an even better match for the likes of the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally X is the fact that they include a simple USB-C input that can also provide up to 60W of power to your device, so you can game and charge at the same time. A built-in kickstand, headphone jack, extra USB-C port, and speakers complete the extras.

What’s more, this screen includes AMD Freesync support, so you can play games without image tearing or stutter when partnered with the AMD chips inside most of the current generation of gaming handhelds.

At a cost of $159.99, the VX1654 is competitively priced, coming in far below the likes of the Asus ROG Strix XG17AHPE, while also having a similar price to many less well-known brands. We don’t have a price for the VX1754 yet but wouldn’t expect it to be significantly more.
