We’ve all seen those messages offering easy in-game money in MMOs. As soon as you log in, the public chat is filled with posts linking to external sites offering a supposed quick and easy way to get fictional currency. This is real money trading (RMT), and for games like WoW, FF14, and Lost Ark it’s against the terms of service, and can easily result in a punishment or ban. For Throne and Liberty though, it’ll put you in severe in-game debt.
Just like in real life, money makes the world of an MMO go around. In Throne and Liberty‘s case, the currency is Lucent, which can be bought with cash or earned via trades in the Auction House. If you buy Lucent from other players with real money though, Amazon and NCSoft make it clear that you’ll go into debt, and lose access to game features until you get out of the hole.
“We have been monitoring RMT activity within Throne and Liberty and have begun enforcement actions on players engaging in prohibited activity,” the MMO’s official game status account writes. “Any players impacted by these actions may see their Lucent balance go into the negative. Additionally, these players will be sanctioned, and access to the Auction House will be restricted until their Lucent balances are brought back into the positive.”
This means any individual players or guilds engaging in RMT must find other ways to get extra Lucent to use the Auction House again. Acting as a trading hub for items and gear, the Auction House is one of the best ways to make Lucent in Throne and Liberty. So by locking RMT players out of the Auction House, the idea is to punish cheaters and potentially force them to buy Lucent for real money, depending on how big their debt is.
The post adds that there’s a “zero tolerance” policy for RMT in Throne and Liberty, and that perpetrators will be punished on an “escalating” basis. These punishments can go all the way up to a permanent ban on your Throne and Liberty account.
“Participating in RMT activity negatively impacts the economy and the gameplay experience for all players by empowering bot activity, encouraging fraudulent transactions, and compromising the hard work of players who follow the rules.”
It’s also worth noting that the Amazon Games code of conduct also expressly bans any RMT activities. It says you must “not engage in real-money trading of in-game items and in-game currencies,” with a warning, penalty, or suspension a potential action that can be taken against you.
Despite Amazon and NCSoft’s action against RMT cheaters, there are still some problems in the MMO. Namely, Throne and Liberty guilds are monopolizing servers and the instanced, PvP, and community content. That’s not all, either, as Throne and Liberty’s first Arch Boss has also run into some issues. Players have reported disconnects, inability to pick up rare loot, and game-breaking lag.
