Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games of recent times and it was a huge relief when it made the leap from consoles to PC just a year after its initial release (unlike its predecessor). Although many gamers will have already added it to their Steam library, if you haven’t, now would be a good time to do so, as it’s 67% off in the Humble Bundle Halloween Festival sale, bringing it down to its lowest price ever.
Red Dead Redemption 2’s sprawling western world gives you so many beautiful locations to explore, from sprawling plains to snowy mountains, dingy caves, and muddy townships. It’s easily one of the best open-world games of all time, and we’re sure it still holds many secrets that have yet to be found. In our Red Dead Redemption 2 review, we scored it a rare 10/10 and described it as “Rockstar’s best game” which is very impressive when you consider the developer’s back catalog.
If you’re one of the rare GTA fans who has never tried the Red Dead series, I heavily recommend it, because it’s essentially a 19th-century cowboy GTA. The GTA 6 release date may still be a little while off, but Red Dead Redemption 2 could do an excellent job of scratching that same itch in the meantime, with the exact same level of freedom, attention to detail, and humor that you’d expect from Rockstar.
Having said that, the humor never gets in the way of telling a genuinely very moving story. You’ll have a few laughs along the way, but the tale of Arthur Morgan, a Van der Linde gang member, taking a path to redemption while coming up against corrupt government forces is as heartbreaking as it is engaging. Don’t worry if you’ve never played the original Red Dead Redemption either, as this is actually a prequel to its predecessor.
Still, if you’re not that interested in profound, emotional storytelling and just want to have fun in the Wild West, that’s an option too – this is one of the best sandbox games, after all. You can go hunting, fishing, bounty-hunting, play poker, horse rustling, or even just run random errands for strangers you meet out in the world. Exploring and mucking around alone can be a lot of fun. There’s probably about 200 hours of content if you do absolutely everything.
Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition is also 70% off in the sale, bringing the price down to $29.99 / £26.99. If you go for this version of the game, you get a little extra story content, plus a nice spread of weapons, outfits, and more for Red Dead Online.
