‘Scrapped’ Spider-Man 2 DLC Confuses Fans, Sparks Speculations

Last week, Insomniac Games confirmed that it has no plans for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 story DLC — a departure from the first game in the series. The news has been met with confusion and has sparked a series of speculations because it was only last year that a massive ransomware attack on the studio confirmed the existence of Spider-Man 2’s DLC.
Why did Insomniac and Sony cancel Spider-Man 2 DLC?
There’s no disputing that Insomniac Games and publisher Sony did have plans for Spider-Man 2 DLC at one point. In March this year, the studio itself ended up confirming the DLC leak when it accidentally included a debug mode in the game’s update, which revealed an entire villian arc.
There’s also a ton of other content that was scrapped, like Symbiote bosses. So, what exactly happened? Some folks are speculating that the content will be used for the leaked Venom spinoff, but there’s currently no indication that the spinoff is going ahead. It may have been canceled like the Spider-Man multiplayer game.
Others are pinning the DLC’s cancellation on the ransomware attack itself, which is highly unlikely to be the case. Given ballooning AAA budgets and lengthy development times, it’s possible that Insomniac was asked to focus on Marvel’s Wolverine instead, which Sony is reportedly planning to showcase soon.
At the moment, no one knows if the leaked content has been scrapped for good or if it will be used in a future entry. We also don’t know whether the next entry will be a spinoff like Miles Morales or a full-fledged game.
