Oklahoma football will be coached by Bob Stoops in their bowl game after Lincoln Riley’s exit but the question of pay made Stoops even more of a legend.
Things got pretty ugly quick for Oklahoma football with Lincoln Riley leaving abruptly after the loss in Bedlam. Quick to step in, though, was Sooners head coaching legend Bob Stoops, who will serve as the interim head coach for the program in their bowl game to finish off the season.
As if that wasn’t an already legendary move enough from Stoops to step away from his FOX broadcasting duties to coach the program that he handed Riley the keys to, it gets even more so with details of his pay being revealed.
According to Oklahoma University President Joe Harroz, Stoops refused multiple times to take any compensation for his interim coaching duties, essentially saying that he would do it for his love of the school and program. Of course, the Sooners wouldn’t listen and are still going to pay him.

In the end, Stoops will be paid compensation based on Riley’s salary, which equates to him getting $325,000 for coaching Oklahoma in their bowl game.
Sure, Bob Stoops is getting a good chunk of change to coach the Sooners, but the fact that he was willing to do it for free speaks to the type of love he has for the Oklahoma football program.
This, of course, isn’t the only instance of that. The manner in which he left his head coaching position spoke to that as well, leaving Riley a program that remained in great shape and with a blueprint for success was another instance of how deeply he cared and still cares for OU.
He was already a legend, but that legend continues to grow.
