Microsoft’s biggest competitor in the console space has unveiled a new PlayStation 5. Announced during a special technical presentation, the PS5 Pro will launch on November 7 and cost a whopping $699.99 / £699.99/ €799.99.PS5 Pro launches in NovemberThe PS5 Pro is Sony’s “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date” and aims to run games with high-fidelity visuals at a smooth 60fps. Sony says it’s achieved this thanks to three key performance features: an upgraded GPU that “enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay,” new ray tracing technology that “allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console,” and AI-Driven Upscaling that uses machine learning-based tech to provide sharper images. For backward-compatible PS5 games playable on the PS5 Pro, they will also benefit from an enhancement called PS5 Pro Game Boost, which “may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games.” Sony adds, “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games.”Interestingly, the PS5 Pro is a 2TB digital-only machine, so those with large physical libraries will need to purchase the Disc Drive for PS5 separately. On top of this, the PS5 Pro also doesn’t come with a stand, so you’ll have to pony up for that too. As for Microsoft and an ‘Xbox Series X Pro’ console, we’ve not heard a single murmur about the possibility of a mid-gen refresh, and not producing one could turn out to be a smart move. While the performance gains we’ve seen from the PS5 Pro are nice, is the upgrade really worth a whopping $700? Would Microsoft be able to command a similar price for a pro console, and would Xbox fans even want it? According to a recent TA poll, 60% of respondents wouldn’t buy a ‘Pro’ Xbox console anyway — and that’s coming from a hardcore base of Xbox users. While we wait for the next-gen Xbox, or whatever Microsoft hardware has planned, we do have three new Xbox Series X|S consoles launching in October.
