Sony has quietly increased the price of the DualSense PS5 controller. Originally priced at $69.99 for its base models, PlayStation Direct along with other major retailers have listed the game pad at the new increased price point.
What is the new price for a DualSense PS5 controller?
According to listings on PlayStation Direct, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop (as spotted by Wario64), the DualSense PS5 controller is now between $74.99 and $79.99, a five dollar mark up. Simple controller colorways, like Midnight Black, White, and Starlight Blue are $74.99. Limited Edition controllers, like the coveted Astro Bot themed controller, are $79.99. Previously, the prices ranged between $69.99 and $74.99.
The DualSense PS5 controller price increase has affected other regions as well. The UK sees a £5 increase while Australia sees a $10 increase.
Sony has not issued a statement regarding the price increase. However, the Japanese Yen has weakened in recent times, and this may be a reaction to the currency’s current value. This does explain the recent price hike of PS5 consoles in Japan, which Sony did issue a statement for a couple weeks ago.
“Given the recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation and the impact it will have on our business, we have reached this decision,” Sony explained. “We appreciate your understanding so that we can continue to provide our customers with the best gaming experience and operate a stable business.”
While DualSense PS5 controllers have seen an increase here in the states, PS5 console prices remain the same.
The controller’s price jump comes alongside the announcement of a PlayStation Technical Presentation. The nine minute stream is scheduled for September 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT. Hosted by PS5 Lead Architect Mark Cerny, the presentation focuses on “PS5 and innovations in gaming technology.”
Although a PS5 Pro hasn’t been formally announced, rumors and speculation have been swirling for months. The most recent sighting was on Sony’s own graphic for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.
