Creatures of Ava launches into Xbox Game Pass very soon, and to help prepare us, Inverge Studios CEO, game designer, and game director Pablo Martínez kindly answered all our questions about the team’s design process for the Creatures of Ava achievements. The gorgeous creature-saving game was a more recent announcement and as a result hasn’t been on our list of upcoming Game Pass games for long, but it quickly caught everybody’s attention with its unique spin on creature saving and its beautifully colorful design. Read on below for our interview about Creatures of Ava’s Xbox achievements! Creatures of Ava devs have “taken care to ensure that there are no achievements in Ava that are practically impossible to attain”Creatures of Ava revolves around exploring a strange, beautiful planet and saving its inhabitants from a bizarre and corrupting infection, while encouraging us to leave behind a “human-centric” view. It looks to be an utterly beautiful game with a unique premise, and we were curious about how this would be reflected in the game’s achievements.“Our approach to designing achievements in Ava revolves around utilizing the available mechanics to reward various aspects of gameplay distinctly,” Martínez says. “We categorize achievements into Story, Photography, Activities, Skill, Completionist, and Fun. These categories cater to different player preferences and gameplay styles, making it easier for everyone to pursue achievements that align with their interests. For example, in the Fun category, there’s an achievement for petting all of Ava’s creatures, whereas in the Skill category, players must chain five creatures into a single beam using our magic staff. This diverse categorization ensures that players can engage with Ava in ways that resonate most with them, whether they enjoy exploring the story, mastering skills, completing activities, or simply having fun interacting with the game world.”As for what makes for an idea achievement list, meanwhile — “that’s a tough question to tackle,” Martínez says. “It really depends on the type of game. For Ava, our aim was to have achievements that reflect different aspects of gameplay: some reward exploration, while others reward skill and attentiveness to your surroundings. Certain achievements cater to collectors and may require more effort, but we’ve always strived to make them accessible to most players who are willing to put in the work. We’ve taken care to ensure that there are no achievements in Ava that are practically impossible to attain.”Creatures of Ava is out very soon on August 7, and, as it stands, is one of only two games confirmed for Game Pass in August so far. We can’t wait to get our hands on it (and if it’s creature saving you’ve been waiting for, we reckon this could be a good contender to scratch the Everwild itch).
