Once the battle is over your friend will tell you to return to town. Head back home and speak with your mother. She informs you that you need to travel to the next town in order to explain to the professor why you had to use his Pokemon. At this point, she gives you the Running Shoes. You can now run and sprint.
It’s automatic. You don’t need to equip them or hold a button. Once you have the Running Shoes unlocked, you can begin sprinting immediately.
